Discover why Wales’ cosmopolitan capital has become one of the UK’s leading centres of tourism in the new millennium.

Cardiff has always been a city of intrigue and contradictions, and significant modernisation in recent years has made it an even more eclectic travel destination. People are attracted to Cardiff for a wide variety of reasons – from its Norman history and folk heritage to its modern sporting accomplishments, shopping charms and buzzing nightlife. Whether you’re visiting Cardiff on a family break, a romantic getaway or a cultural excursion, you’ll never be stuck for options in this remarkable city.
You can see signs of old Cardiff wherever you travel in the modern city, though you may have to look closely. Often, quaint Victorian shops selling antiques and other traditional mementos nestle alongside modern designer outlets, and the Norman Keep of Cardiff Castle now has to compete with the Millennium Stadium to command the city’s skyline. This premier sporting venue can be visited every day except match days.
There are still plenty of places to go if you’re eager to explore Cardiff’s heritage too, such as the Welsh Folk Museum and the even more impressive Museum of Welsh Life – the latter being something of an understatement, in its recreation of more than 40 traditional buildings in the 100-acre manor grounds. Cardiff boasts many other wide open spaces too, such as Roath Park which is just two miles north of the city centre.
The National Museum & Gallery is another enduringly popular cultural destination that’s easy to find, just next to Cardiff Civic Centre. With free entry for visitors of all ages, paying a visit can be a good way to stretch your travel money further on Cardiff city breaks.
If you’re visiting with children, staying at a Cardiff hotel in the vicinity of Cardiff Bay offers prime access to many of the city’s leading attractions and entertainments. This trendy area houses the Wales Millennium Centre as well as other highly rated family attractions, including Craft in the Bay and the Goleulong 2000 Lightship. Techniquest is another local attraction that’s ideal for curious kids, featuring more than 160 interactive exhibits covering all aspects of science.
Even with all these modern sites, historic Cardiff Castle is still one of the city’s biggest tourist attractions, and one of the best castles to visit in the UK. Visitors can explore ancient areas such as the 15th century Undercroft vault, which is still in use today, or just enjoy walking the majestic grounds and observing the local wildlife, such as free-roaming peacocks.
